Boundary Survey
Peabody Wildlife Management Area
Muhlenberg and Ohio Counties, Kentucky

Palmer Engineering is a partner in a joint venture selected by the Kentucky Finance Cabinet and Department of Fish and Wildlife to perform boundary surveys of three wildlife refuge areas in Muhlenberg and Ohio Counties. The boundaries to be surveyed are more than 150 miles in length and incorporate more than 33,000 acres of land. These areas are part of a reclaimed strip mining operation by Peabody Coal Company that began in the early 1960s. Within the boundaries of these refuse areas lie prime hunting and fishing lands, including hundreds of lakes and streams. These wildlife refuge areas can be used by the public for fishing and hunting with a special refuge permit from the Department of Fish and Wildlife. Deer, turkey and water fowl are plentiful and the lakes and streams are stocked with many species of fish. The survey will likely be conducted during the fall and winter, with completion in mid-1999.

Photo Control Surveys for Mapping
Palmer Engineering is currently performing photo control surveys on two highway projects for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet in conjunction with aerial photogrammetry firms. One of the projects is a realignment of US 460 from the community of Belcher to the West Virginia state line near the Breaks Interstate Park in Pike County; the other is a realignment of KY 163 through the communities of Rockbridge and Cyclone to KY 90 near Beaumont in Monroe and Metcalfe Counties. Palmer crews are placing survey marks that will aid future surveys in design and staking. Global Positioning System (GPS) satellite receivers and equipment are being used in locating the ground control base. The photogrammetry firms will then prepare mapping from the photo identities located during the survey.

Surveys
Tennessee Department of Transportation

Since 1988, Palmer Engineering has provided highway and bridge surveys to the Tennessee Department of Transportation for over 100 miles of route surveys, 45 miles of right-of-way staking, and 20 bridge surveys. Other surveys include a weigh station, six wetland surveys, 18 culvert replacement projects, and construction staking of a wetland mitigation bank.
